The Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano was always going to be very, very good. Strapping the Enzo's 6.0-litre V12 into a car that could be used every day, on any road, was such a good idea that it could barely fail.

Our only tiny worry was that the 599 would just be a little too refined. With Ferrari's absolute mastery of all the F1 gubbins - magnetorheological dampers, aluminium spaceframe, blindingly quick gear changes - we feared that the furious, feral supercar heart might be drowned in a sea of electronic trickery.

And then we found the button on the centre console marked 'LC'. That's LC for Launch Control.

Press this and the 599 emits a truly brain-splitting howl, followed by a stomach-turning lurch forward, a scream of tyres and enough smoke to mask the entire car. Oh, and a pair of neat black lines running 100 feet up the road behind the car.

Yes, it's a gimmick. But a seriously cool gimmick, and one that shows Ferrari didn't forget the fun when dreaming up this astonishing supercar.

It's not just the Launch Control that makes the 599 epic to drive, though. Give the left-hand column-mounted gear paddle a flick and the 599 shifts from being a long-legged, smooth-cruising continent swallower and moves into the twilight zone.

It is, by any standards, absurdly fast. It'll keep pace with the Enzo on just about any road, and drift with the best of them. The noise from the V12 is simply immense, too - an operatic boom climbing to a ballistic yowl at the 8,400rpm redline.

But the 599 isn't scary to drive - just brilliantly intuitive. It's utterly comfortable with its own performance, and keeps you perfectly informed every step of the way.

Is it beautiful? Even now, we're not quite sure - and we've taken every possible opportunity to get up close and personal with the 599. With its slashes and gashes, the 599 is no instant classic, but like the 575 it's definitely a grower.

And with such incredible and useable performance, we'll happily give the 599 GTB all the time it needs to grow on us. Especially if we can press that LC button just one more time. Please?

Direi che sono d'accordo con questa classifica, solo la Picasso mi perplime... è davvero bruttina! Ah, ieri ho visto la prima new Mini... era una S con tetto non in tinta, dal vivo è meglio che in foto... ma non è che mi faccia strappare i capelli e tanto meno le orecchie! :)

It's the sentimental vote, right? We've already had a fair few emails - from the eagle-eyed among you who spotted the XK on our preview video - accusing us of playing the sympathy card by selecting Jaguar's GT.

Why not the Merc SL? Why not the 6-Series? They're more sorted cars, surely - aren't we just being maudlin, and British and silly?

Well, no, actually. The new XK is better than the Merc. It's better than the Beemer. It's the best GT in the world, period.

OK, so it's got a silly chrome aerial and the dash is pretty bland. And even the blown version of the XK's ageing 4.2-litre block only develops 420bhp. German superminis manage that nowadays.

Doesn't matter. Because the XK drives like a dream. In fact, it drives just like a Jag should. Intuitive and responsive, but never rock solid.

This performance is largely thanks to the magical aluminium structure of the XK. Bonded and riveted, there's not a single weld in the frame, which makes it strong but also super-light.

And, oh Teutonic detractors, have you seen the XK? Just look at it. The XK is not just pretty. It's magnificent, hood up or hood down. Elegant, clean and simple, but with enough going on at the front and back to make sure that everyone - everyone - is going to take a second look.

And that's why the XK is our GT of the year. Beautiful, brilliant and just a tiny bit flawed. But aren't we all?

mettete qualsiasi altro marchio al posto del cavallino e nessuno se ne accorge della 599....

certo una signora meccanica ma in abito indecene (prima mi piaceva ora dopo esserci stato su e vista su strada in varie angolazioni no..)

Ma la ford s-max non potrebbe far parte delle family car?

senti se tu hai lo scorbuto ai sensi del gusto estetico e di macchine non capisci una ceppazza non è che devi angosciarci all'infinito

oggettivamente kaos  io vedo un netto regresso nelle linee ferrari dai tempi della 355/456 ad oggi.

la 430 mi sa di troppo carico/vecchio (meglio la 360 cs ad esempio)

la scaglietti non la supporto

la 599 in alcune angolazioni  è molto bella ma altre mi delude..

la enzo non è bella ma tecnica diciamo..

Io non trovo che le Ferrari attuali siano brutte, però concordo con te nel dire che che c'è stato un sensibile regresso ;)

la 599 dal vivo è bellissima per me....a suo tempo la 550 dal vivo mi deluse parecchio...diciamo che la 599 è una di quelle macchine che dal vivo rende molto..la 550 al contrario...intendiamoci non che fosse brutta anzi....per quanto riguarda la 430 è meno elegante della modena ma ben più cattiva....solo che secondo me la 430 è troppo alta...cmq la peggior ferrari mai disegnata è la scaglietti veramente anonima...

Imho c'è stato un regresso estetico nelle attuali Ferrari, il che non vuol dire che siano brutte, ma solo che le precedenti versioni erano più semplici ed efficaci, quelle attuali invece sono più "caricate" anche se non eccessivamente...paragonare una 430 ad una 360 o meglio ancora ad una 355 o una 575 ad una 559, se dal lato tecnico non ha senso perchè stravincerebbero le ultime nate, dal lato estetico per me non ha neanche senso perchè stravincerebbero le più vecchie...

Certo che la Jaguar XK e la TT non le vedo proprio come le regine dei rispettivi segmenti di appartenenza, sia come linee (la Jaguar scopiazzata pesantemente dalla Aston Martin e la TT ancora troppo simile alla vecchia) e sia come tecnica/prestazioni.
