McRae feared killed in chopper crash

Former World Rally champion Colin McRae is feared dead after a his helicopter crashed near his home in Scotland, killing all it's pilot and all three passengers.

Crash investigators have now begun examining the wreckage of the Squirrel helicpoter, which came down on McRae's Jerviswood Estate near Lanark, following a statement by Strathclyde police in which they said they believed the 39-year-old Scot was on-board.

Police also said that they hope to be able to identify the four victims later on today.

"We are hoping to be in a position to confirm the identities of those involved later today," a spokesman said.

Police cordoned off the area, including a private road up to the McRae family house, which is set in several acres of ground.

Strathclyde Police initially said that the damage was so bad from the accident that they didn't know how many people were on board.

But it emerged that the force had been in contact with the McRae family in connection with the crash.

A statement released by the force late overnight stated: "We can now confirm that four people were on board the helicopter which crashed in a wooded area, in Jerviswood."

It added: "The bodies were found within the helicopter, which is owned by Mr Colin McRae of Jerviswood House, Lanark.

"It is believed he was on board the helicopter however until formal identification has taken place, we will not be able to confirm the identities of those onboard."

McRae became the first British driver to win the world rally championship in 1995 and, aged 27 at the time, remains the youngest man to do so.

LONDON (AFP) - Former world rally champion Colin McRae and his five-year-old son were among four people killed in a helicopter crash this weekend in southern Scotland, police said Sunday.

Scotsman McRae, his son Johnny and two family friends including a six-year-old boy were killed when the 39-year-old driver's Squirrel Two aircraft crashed in the grounds of his Lanark home on Saturday.

Tributes poured in from the sporting and political arenas in honour of McRae, who in 1995 was the first Briton to win the world rally championship.

"We believe that the group were just returning from a visit to the nearby village of Quarter around 1605 (1505 GMT) hours yesterday, when it appears that the helicopter got into difficulty and crashed within the grounds of Mr McRae's family home," Chief Superintendent Tim Love said in a statement issued by Strathclyde Police.

"Our officers are working closely with the Air Accident Investigation Team who are presently at the scene.

"Family liaison officers have been appointed and are with the families to help them through this distressing and difficult time."

The two others were named as six-year-old Ben Porcelli, of Lanark, and Graeme Duncan, 37, who lived in France.

A police spokeswoman stressed that the bodies had not yet been formally identified.

The crash wreckage, which was in thick woods, was so bad it was initially difficult to determine how many people were involved.

Colin Steele McRae, a licensed pilot, was born in Lanark on August 5, 1968.

He had two children, Hollie and Johnny, with his wife Alison.

Nicky Grist, McRae's co-driver since 1997, expressed his sorrow.

"He was such a great character and will be sorely missed," he told Sky News, adding that the death of Johnny and the two friends made it an even greater tragedy.

"Johnny adored his father and loved everything about cars," Grist said.

"I am sure he was the new rally driver for the McRae family."

David Richards, McRae's former boss at Subaru -- where he enjoyed much of his rallying success -- described his death as "a terrible loss."

"He had a competitive spirit like I've never seen," Richards tod the BBC.

"He was one of those people who had an extraordinary spirit that you just can't define."

Scotland's First Minister, Alex Salmond, said McRae's death was a "great tragedy."

"Colin McRae was an outstanding Scottish sportsman of international stature and achievement," he said.

McRae competed in his first rally on the World Rally Championship circuit in Sweden in 1987, earning his first win in New Zealand in 1993.

Driving a Subaru Impreza 555, the Scot won the 1995 World Rally Championship in a nail-biting finish on home soil and was the runner-up in 1996, 1997 and 2001.

He was made a MBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 1996.

The driving legend is also known for "Colin McRae Rally" -- a series of racing video games, played on many platforms, which have sold more than eight million copies worldwide.

The rally driver's official website, www.colinmcrae.com, was changed to a black screen on Sunday morning, prior to police confirmation of his death.

"I'm not really a fan of computers," McRae was quoted as saying on his website before it went offline.

He added: "When it comes to computers and electronics, give me 300 brake horsepower, a winding road -- and no brakes, and then you've got my attention!"

STATEMENT ISSUED ON BEHALF OF COLIN McRAE’S FAMILY

Speaking on behalf of the whole family, Colin’s father, Jim McRae, said today:

“It is with much sadness and regret that we have to make this statement.

It is unbelievable that Colin and Johnny’s lives have been taken so prematurely and in such a tragic manner.

Colin was a great son, a loving husband to Alison and a fantastic father to Johnny and his big sister Hollie. Johnny was a great wee guy, spending every spare minute with his dad, and even at this early stage it looked like he had the potential to carry on the family dynasty.

Our thoughts are also very much with the families of Ben Porcelli and Graeme Duncan. Ben was a great buddy of Johnny’s and they had always spent a lot of time together both in and out of school. Graeme, who now resides in France, had been a close friend of Colin’s since their schooldays and was back in Lanark on holiday.

We are thankful for the overwhelming number of messages of support we have received from all around the world. Colin was very much an inspiration and role model to motorsport fans the world over.

As you can imagine this is a very difficult time for the family and we would ask that our privacy be respected and we be allowed to grieve in private.”

Domanda forse stupida ma, cosa significa la sigla MBE accanto al suo nome?

Comunque, leggere la notizia "definitiva" fa una certa impressione, accidenti.

forse Member of the order of British Empire? o qualcosa del genere? una qualche onorificenza..tipo Cavaliere o Grand'Ufficiale?

Non ci avevo minimamente pensato, potrebbe anche essere

notizia tremenda,per me che negli anni 90 mi avvicinavo ai rally,colin era un simbolo,era il pilota di punta della mia auto preferita(subaru),nonchè un vero e proprio matto,sempre di traverso e sempre sul tetto!!

non immaginate la mia angoscia quando l'ho sentito oggi,quando Rossi ha dedicato a lui la vittoria...surreale come mi sia quasi sentito in colpa,per aver esultato sino a pochi secondi prima!

la cosa triste è che anche qui..tutti a parlare di McRae..ma la notizia è che nell'incidente sono morti il figlio di 5 anni ed un suo amichetto di 6....oltre ad un altro passeggero...

Io invece ho trovato più triste lo scarso spazio dato alla notizia ieri al tg delle 13, sia canale 5 che rai1. Tutti a parlare del testamento di Pavarotti quando invece, oltre a un grande campione, se ne sono andati due piccoli bambini. Vabbè, non è la sede adatta per fare di queste polemiche.

Mi dispiace molto, già lui era giovane, poi assieme a lui è morto anche il figlio di 5 anni... condoglianze alla famiglia :'(

Mi ricorda la morte straziante di Mike Hailwood, il grandissimo campione di motociclismo, che morì inun incidente di auto con la figlia. Sono casi che fanno impressione, ma quanti ne avvengono tutti i giorni con protagonisti persone non famose?

tanti  :-X, troppi e purtroppo non fanno nemmeno più notizia e non ci fanno ne caldo ne freddo ::)

Oggi è stata pubblicata la perizia fatta AAIB, agenzia investigativa incidenti aerei, e risulta che Colin abbia affrontato il viaggio in elicottero ad una quota abbastanza ridotta per poter avere più velocità senza calcolare che la zona era soggetta a correnti di vento che ne avrebbero potuto causare sbandate pericolose, cosa che poi pare sia avvenuta facendo cozzare il rotore dell'elicottero contro la cima di un abete.
Il tutto pare sia avvalorato da una ripresa fatta da un passeggero.
E' risultato inoltre che la licenza era scaduta da marzo 2007 mentre l'incidente è avvenuto nel mese di settembre.
