Quelli di Evo.uk hanno messo le mani su una Cayenne Turbo e.. ne parlano bene! Dicono che è molto bella nelle autobahn a 150mph (parenti di 240km/h..) e che pure nel misto, nonostante 2355kg, è agile e ha aderenza come una berlina sportiva.. Pare che in GB la Porsche abbia raccolto numerosi ordini e che molti degli acquirenti hanno in garage pure una sportiva seria.. "Now, who said they didn't like its looks?"  :o

Given its historic reputation for building thrilling drivers cars like the 911 and Boxster, Porsche's decision to produce a monster, two-ton off-roader caused jaws to hit the floor. Now, just two weeks after the controversial Cayenne made its UK debut at the British Motor Show, we've got the chance to drive it.

After the bright lights of Birmingham's NEC, seeing a Cayenne in proper daylight makes a big difference to its looks. While it's not what you would call pretty, the Cayenne's bully boy face and towering stance are softened. The curvy bonnet, wheelarches and softly contoured doors suddenly make a Range Rover appear slabby and a BMW X5 a bit lumpy. Absurd as it may sound, given that its stablemates are low-slung sports cars, the Cayenne has a real Porsche look about it. Perhaps design boss Harm Lagaay isn't as crazy as we'd thought...

In any case, the beauty of this beast is far more than skin-deep. Although an entry-level S is available, from £42,000, we're driving the flagship Cayenne Turbo, which has a brand new 450bhp, 4.5-litre twin-turbo V8 shoehorned under the bonnet.

Unsurprisingly, its performance is almost in the supercar league, with a 165mph top speed and a 5.9-second 0-62mph time. No off-roader comes close to matching this kind of pace.

But unlike its closest rival, the X5, the Cayenne has been designed with serious on and off-road driving in mind. Key to its mud-plugging skills is the new Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive system, which can send all the V8's energy to the front or rear wheels in extreme conditions, and monitor air-suspension that can lift the Cayenne's belly nearly a foot off the ground. There are also sophisticated stability control systems to help the car cope with the toughest driving environments.

No wonder Porsche engineers claim the Cayenne has the all-terrain ability to rival that of the new Range Rover - although we're not convinced that many owners will want to scrabble through mud and over rocks in £68,000-worth of Porsche. No matter, as the knowledge that their Cayenne could climb a mountain is probably enough. What Á Á we can say with the utmost certainty is that there's never been an off-roader quite so quick on the tarmac. Driving on the autobahns around Stuttgart is a remarkable experience, as the giant Turbo cruises at 150mph or more as easily as you or I would sit at 70mph on the motorway here. It's refined, too, with the merest hint of engine noise in the background. And you'll be reassured to know the Cayenne is as keen to stop as it is to go, thanks to brake discs the size of dustbin lids and Porsche's latest ABS system to prevent the huge 19-inch wheels from locking up in emergencies.

It doesn't just excel on motorways, either. Take the Cayenne on a twisty country road and you'll be amazed at how responsive it feels through corners. Weighing 2,355kg, the off-roader is certainly heavy, but it steers and grips in the same way as a sporty saloon.

It changes gear like one, too, thanks to the new six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, which has the same steering wheel-mounted buttons for shifting ratios as you'll find in a 911 or Boxster. It's a smooth, responsive gearbox which is perfectly suited to the bi-turbo V8's lusty delivery, and gives you more control than a conventional auto. However, for those of you who prefer to change gear for yourself, the less powerful, non-turbocharged Cayenne S will be offered in both Tiptronic and manual guise, priced from a cheaper £42,000.

Although undoubtedly more sporting than any previous off-roader we've tried, with the air-suspension in 'Comfort' mode and the Tiptronic gearbox set to fully auto, the Cayenne Turbo allows you to waft along in luxurious style, giving you time to enjoy the spacious, leather-lined interior, electric seats, air-conditioning and high-quality stereo.

In fact, the more you drive the Cayenne, the more you realise how complete it is in all respects. It's supremely swift on long motorway journeys, fast and fun on B-roads and second only to a mountain goat when the going gets rough. The Porsche appears to cover all the bases, especially when you consider most Cayenne buyers will already have a pure-bred sports car in their garage.

It's enough to impress us. We had our doubts about Porsche's first foray outside its core sports car business, but after driving it, we're sure the Cayenne's a winner. Just don't take too long getting used to its styling. By the close of the Motor Show, Porsche GB had 1,300 orders, worth £65million, and the waiting list was already longer than six months. Now, who said they didn't like its looks?

Curiosità, non sò se avete notato ma pesa quanto una Phaeton W12! Entrambe 23qli abbondanti!  :o

ragazzi...questa foto del muso è assolutamente oscena!...ok che a me nn piace (ma ovviamente l'ho vista solo in foto) ma questa è la sua angolazione peggiore in assoluto!

Secondo me invece la peggiore è la vista posteriore.. assolutamente orribile! Poi dicono che live le cose cambiano però.. quando hai davanti agli occhi una simile oscenità.. è difficile crederlo! Questa è secondo me l'unica foto in cui appare meno brutta del solito  ;D ;D

La vista di fronte è brutta...pure le altre viste, perchè la si vede come una finta porsche. Una porsche ti aspetti che sia bassa e agile.
Se si pensa che è solamente una SUV o SIV o SAV......appare molto piu' bella alla vista.

Beh Danny.. non hai tutti i torti forse ma cmq vedere il marchio Porsche su quel trattore fà cmq effetto, di certo non un effetto positivo (almeno per me)! Mi auguro piuttosto che le info su 4Palle circa una versione pick-up del Cayenne siano errate.. altrimenti ci sarebbe da dire "We are at the fruit" come dice il Barn.. Infine il Sorento.. Marco.. già perchè ha la targa tedesca meriterebbe un pò di acqua nel gasolio  :P Cmq.. in ambito SUV.. esteticamente parlando credo che la più gradevole sia la ML (la 55AMG sopratutto  ;D) e la X5.. la RX300 non mi dice assolutamente nulla..

Se facessero una versione Pick-up vorrebbe dire che han proprio "calato le braghe". Pur di vendere sarebbero disposti a tutto. Noi non la vedremmo, comunque. Penso che sia solo per il mercato americano....  Ma non la faranno, credo....spero! [smiley=afro.gif] [smiley=+35.gif]

Per quanto mi riguarda, esteticamente ML e Cayenne fanno una più schifo dell'altra.... Un po' meglio X5, anche se ci sono delle angolazioni in cui pure quella mi fa schifo... Diciamo che stranamente, per quanto mi riguarda, in questo settore i giapanissssss sono avanti... per esempio mi piace molto la Pajerso Sport o qualche altra....
Ammetto che il Camion di Alura, per quanto mezzo pesante, non mi dispiace affatto....
Ah, la più inutile? La Lexus, ltre a non essere bella, non ha neanche quel senso di potenza e imponenza.....

RX300

Quando sono stato negli States, in particolare a New York (erano 2 anni fa) mi aveva colpito quante ce n'erano. Dovunque guardavi vedevi una Lexus RX300, quasi tutte guidate da donne.

Ammetto che mi piaceva (ora un filo meno). Soprattutto gli interni sono notevoli, con quello schermo TFT gigante in mezzo alla plancia che mostra tutte le funzioni della macchina.... ora e' una soluzione diffusa nelle macchine di fascia alta... ma allora era la prima volta che lo vedevo e mi aveva particolarmente colpito !

Tra i SIV l'unico che comprerei (se proprio avessi i soldi da buttar nel cesso e avessi altre 4 o 5 macchine) è l'X5 che mi piace da matti. Però probabilmente sceglierei la Range che è davvero splendida! ML, Cayenne e Touareg mi fan abbastanza schifo anche se tra i tre il migliore resta il VW. Il Lexus?Bah. A quel punto spenderei la metà e prenderei davvero il Sorento!!! Però un bel Navigator o un Durango [smiley=vogel.gif] [smiley=+32.gif]
