Titolo: AUTOCAR: De Silva compiaciuto dalla Alfa 8C

Fifteen years on, Alfa's super car gets de? Silva?s seal of approval

DANIELE BANDIERA isn't your traditional enthusiast, yet it seems that not only does the bloke know just what's needed to make Alfa a credible marque but, more importantly, he has the influence within Fiat Auto to make it happen.
Alfa's been wanting to build a proper super car for at least 15 years, but has never quite managed to convince the bean counters it was a viable proposition. By cleverly utilizing various key Maserati components to reduce initial investment, and wrapping them in an evocative shape that could only be a true Alfa, Bandiera appears to have
done just that.
Alfa design boss Wolfgang Egger says work on the current car began three years ago under Walter de' Silva, who subsequently moved to Seat and later took control of Audi and Lamborghini design. De' Silva's proposal went nowhere and a year ago, after the arrival and direct involvement of Bandiera, Egger initiated the proposal that became
the 8C Competizione.
'We wanted to do something to sit on top of the [existing] Alfa range,' says Egger. 'We want to say to the world, we are able to do it better and more beautifully.'
Alfa's designers openly admit they drew on some of the marque's best-looking cars, including Touring of Milano models from the 1930s, and even took the front fender
curve from the exotic '40s French coachbuilders.
They started out using the Maser platform, but after it didn't gel switched to unique underpinnings. 'There was no sense in making a compromise if we wanted a pure Alfa,' claims the talented German designer.
Understandably, de' Silva couldn't stay away from the Alfa stand. On the first press day morning, when he should have been on the Audi stand talking Le Mans Quattro, he turned up to take in Egger's work.
After some serious contemplation he delivered his verdict to a nervous audience that included exterior designer Daniele Gaglione and Manuel Draz, who styled the interior.
'You did a real Alfa Romeo, I'm proud of you,' he told a delighted Egger.
