WHY DOES VW BOTHER MAKING LAMBOS, BUGATTIS, PHAETONS AND THE LIKE?
THERE ARE two elements to VW's top-end strategy, which should probably be viewed separately. The first is the key project - an attempt to raise pricing on the VW brand thanks to the supposed 'halo' effect of Phaeton and Touareg. Not everyone agrees with the logic, but at least everyone can understand the objectives. Volkswagen's manufacturing costs are uncompetitive versus both European and Japanese competitors and it desperately needs higher pricing if it is to avoid painful restructuring and job losses. VW is losing money on almost every non-Audi car it sells, a situation that is unsustainable. But it's dubious whether the strategy will work. VW probably spent over ?1.5bn on the Phaeton and could lose another ?1OOmn or more each year during its lifecycle. Put simply, VW would need to raise prices by almost ?400 on every Golf and Passat sold for the next 1 5 years to get that money back. That seems improbable. The second part is the non-VW-brand super car expansion, which appears to be far less financially rational. The costs are again huge, but there's no clear payback for VW's real businesses. It just looks like an expensive distraction that ultimately is taking away engineering resources from the important models. Martin Winterkorn, former head of R&D, is on record as saying that the Bugatti has taken five times the engineering effort of the Polo, and that was back in 2001. Neither Phaeton nor the super car brands have any hope of making money on a fully costed basis. So why is Dr. Pischetsrieder continuing with these Piech-era projects? The answer is simple. First, he's inherited these projects from the very man who salvaged his career after BMW-Rover. With Piech still very much in the background as head of the Supervisory Board, Pischetsrieder probably feels it's his duty to complete the grand master plan. He's also probably willing to give the 'price your way out of cost problems' strategy a go, rather than taking the axe to jobs. Second, much of the money has already been spent, so giving up now won't really save much. The engines, transmissions and electrical architecture for these cars have already been developed. The plants and tooling at Dresden, Crewe and Sant'Agata have been installed. While these cars won't make a real profit, they can probably be cash flow neutral on an ongoing basis, if VW ignores the money already spent. The acid test comes when it's time to reinvest for the next model cycle. It's tough to see how VW will be able to justify further funding for these brands - neither cash nor manpower are likely to be available next time round. This will probably be the peak as far as industry-wide super car supply is concerned. Autocar financial expert (anonymous)
